Fall, 2008
Hello from Santa Monica!
Autumn is officially upon us. The days are cooler, the leaves are falling and it's impossible to go anywhere between 7 and 9
in the morning without having to stop for a school bus. The past few months have been a time of change for me... the birth of my son, the
loss of a family member. Emotional challenges abound. But underneath it all, there's a strong sense of rebirth, something I've been working to
echo in my own artistic explorations.

I've been continuing to shoot work for my long-term "defocussed architecture" project over the past few months. The approach here is simple:
shoot architectural features with a lens purposefully thrown out of focus. The purpose is to take attention away from detail and allow the user to "focus"
on the broader whole of the composition - abstraction by way of a gross reduction in recognizable features.
The entire series of images will likely become available as limited edition, fine art prints in the coming months as I put the finishing touches in place.

Jellyfish I
- 2007 -
As I see it, jellyfish are one of the most amazing creatures in the ocean. And that's saying something, considering how many unique and incredible
beings inhabit the seldom-explored depths. This particular print features aequorea victoria, known more commonly as the crystal jelly, a
bioluminescent jellyfish found off the western coast of North America from the Bering Sea to southern California. This jellyfish is capable of
producing flashes of blue light via a quick release of calcium which then interacts with a photoprotein. Though an avid scuba diver, I sadly have
never encountered these jellies in their natural habitat: this particular image was shot at the Monterey Bay aquarium.
This print is currently showing in my Cnidarians gallery.
Cheers,
Walt Jones
